Many guests who stay with us here at Dordogne Holiday Barns enjoy walking in the Dordogne, discovering the many routes perfectly suited for all abilities. Late September and October are, in our opinions, perfect for walks as the colours remain vibrant and autumnal.

The growth in adventure tourism, biking, hiking and walking holidays has been a welcomed boost for sustainable tourism in rural communities throughout Europe. ‘Traditional’ destinations such as the Alps are being shunned by a new style of explorer who is eager to avoid the crowds and annoyingly extortionate prices.
The Eastern Rhodope Mountains in Bulgaria offer some of the most breath taking scenery imaginable, free from the organised masses and possibly the most economic destination anywhere in the EU.

We must have been asked the same question over a hundred times but we never tire of telling a story that we’re happy to recall: “So how did you find this place?” invariably the question is posed at our weekly pizza party, an evening at the start of the week to which we invite all of our guests, to join us making pizza at our traditional outdoor log burning oven.

One day in 1987, when we were camping with friends at East Prawle, we saw discarded auction details for a wooden shack and 1 ½ acres of land nearby. The location was exceptional. It has panoramic coastal views dominated by Deckler’s Cliff and Bolthead. The coastal path is close by, just above the lovely beach Seacombe Sands.

Swallows and Amazons forever; the cry sings out from the pages of Arthur Ransome’s classic story as the Walker children prepare for another adventure aboard a little wooden boat called “Swallow.” At the age of 10, I spent many happy hours with my nose in a book wishing I could join them. Ever since reading these classic stories of a utopian childhood spent messing about in boats I have been desperate to own my own sailing craft.
